Gaviota Section

The Gaviota section is all about the old cement. There are no old motels, gas stations, or any businesses that catered to motorists to cover in this whole area. But there are many locations where the old 1915 cememt highway is still in existance. I did my best to photograph and document as much of it as I could. I admit that I may have crawled through a few barbed wire fences to get some of these images back in 2008, but I feel that it was well worth it. You will also see the widening strip of concrete that was added to many areas of the old highway. In most places in Santa Barbara County, the original 1915 highway was 16 ft wide. At some time, there was a 2 ft. concrete strip added to both sides to make it 20 ft. wide.

I have divided the Gaviota section into two parts...Gaviota East, and Gaviota West. The east part starts just north of the city of Goleta, and extends about 10 miles to the west, and includes 6 locations. The west part continues from there, and ends at the Gaviota pass and tunnel. It includes 9 more locations, and has some of the most beautiful spots of the whole project.
